Not our words, but the verdict of some of the many enthusiasts who turned out to view D9524 (aka 14 901) at the Elsecar Diesel Gala on August 31st. The platform filled to overflowing as the ECS entered, and later the large group of photographers squeezed by the Society messroom to get photos as the loco stood at the end of its first run (the 12.00) said it all. But it was not without incident. At the end of that first run,a coolant temperature switch tripped and caused the crew a few headaches, and on its third run of the day, a blocked primary fuel filter ran the header tank dry and the engine cut out near Hemingfield. Nevertheless, the Gala was an operational and commercial success and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. See you agin next year?
